The MUST Ministries Smyrna Program offers food, clothing and employment services as well as breads and sweets. Clients receive food and clothing assistance, referral assistance and employment assistance and participate in a variety of classes in the classroom and the computer lab, both staffed by volunteers. Bethany collects food items to distribute to MUST and has several members who volunteer with MUST on a regular basis.
On the 22nd of each Month, Bethany prepares a meal for the homeless at Elizabeth Inn. Different classes and Women’s Circles adopt a month.
Habitat for Humanity
Bethany is a part of the The Cobb Interfaith Habitat Coalition (CIHC) which is an interfaith group including Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths focused on funding and building Habitat homes to give back to the community. CIHC received the Creating Community Award in 2013 for their efforts to further the goals of diversity and inclusion in the community. Bethany is proud that this year will mark our 20th Habitat build! We support build sby providing funding as well as volunteers.
Bethany is in the beginning stages of finding ways to support Tim Datwyler who serves as a lay missionary in Ecuador. Tim needs financial support to sustain his ministry to children and their families. Teaching, preaching, and building relationships is what Tim’s ministry is all about.
In cooperation with Thomas Agutu of Nairobi, Kenya, Bethany is building relationships with the widows and orphans in the village of Obaga. Bethany efforts are helping to provide decent shelter, food, training and tools so that this ignored part of the population can survive and become self-sufficient. Bethany also provides food to the Good Samaritan Orphanage in the slum of Mathare where Mama Mercy does an amazing job caring for rescued children.
Each year for Christmas, Bethany UMC adopts families from Russell Elementary (names given to us by the school) who need help with Christmas gifts offering Bethany members the opportunity to adopt one of the families in need. This past year we also supported a family in the United Methodist Children’s Home Foster Care Program.
Military Dogs / Soldiers Angels
Bethany supports Soldiers Angels K-9 Team, a lifeline U.S. military dog teams making sure both dogs and handlers have what they need when they need it for work or a well-earned break. The K-9 Team adopts military dog teams to send a letter a week and at least one care package a month for both the dog and the handler. For example, a package can include a chew toy and treats, or even hygiene items like shampoo or clippers, plus the regular snacks and goodies for a service member. The K-9 Team also works as a group to raise funds for major canine equipment purchases such as cooling mats/vests, doggles (goggles for dogs), and booties and develops relationships with local pet shops to get discounts or conduct item fundraisers. Action Ministries Lunch Program
Each summer, Bethany UMC provides 200 sack lunches per week to the Action Ministries Summer Lunch Program for students in the community who are dependent on free or reduced price meals during the school year. Sunday School classes, as well as youth and staff, adopt a week to provide and assemble the lunches which are then taken to a distribution site where they are sent where they are needed.
